Seeing Beyond the Lines
Well now you’ve done it.
You’ve come to the realization that life as it is, is not the way you want it to be, or believe that it could be.
You feel that in your core something could be different.
You’ve identified the lines and are ready to reach beyond them.
But there is a small problem. If all you’ve ever known is life inside the lines, how in heaven’s name are you supposed to create a life outside the lines?
Valid question. Here’s how to begin.
Identify what life outside the lines looks like.
There are four primary areas for men to focus on in their life.
Faith & Spirituality
Family & Relationships
Finances & Career
Fitness & Health
Now each of these areas has many other sub-areas, and honestly many of those sub areas are interchangeable with areas from the other categories.
For example, “Purpose” could fall under the category of Career but it can also come under the umbrella of spirituality.
Where it falls isn’t nearly as important as identifying it as an important area of your life that you want to change.
So in these four areas identify what life would look like differently.
What are some of the limiting beliefs you have around these areas?
Are those beliefs true or do they need to be destroyed like a turkey on Thanskgiving?
Here’s an example.
I recently took my kids to a Texas Legends basketball game against the Motor City Cruise. The Texas Legends are a G-League professional sports time. One step below the NBA.
We went because on the other team was a player by the name of Ryan Turrell, an Orthodox Jewish player, sporting the well known Jewish headcovering - a Kippah (or Yalmuke).
For a very long time we Orthodox Jews believed that professional sports isn’t the space for us. We felt that we wouldn’t be able to make it work with our strict dietary laws, weekly sabbath and so much more. Besides most of our time had to be devoted to running the world, controlling the banks, and running the film industry.
The lines dictated that sports and religious Jews don’t mix.
Ryan Turrell shattered those lines and opened the floodgates to other Orthodox Jews entering the arena. (Sorry guys, looks like we are going to be taking control of another industry).
You too can do the same thing with your life.
What ever the script has been up until now - ‘My family is meant to be poor. I’m not professional enough. My religion prevents me from doing that. I’m to overweight. Etc. Etc. Etc.
There are plenty of excuses and reasons we will tell ourselves. But we have to throw those away.
Look at what life could be outside the lines. Verify that it doesn’t break your morals, values, & ethics. Establish that it doesn’t go against Man’s laws or G-d’s laws.
Then go for it.
